The Starry Giant by the Sea: A Whale Shark Themed Mobile Container Traveling Exhibition
If you cannot go to the seaside every day, then let the ocean come to find you.
The Starry Giant by the Sea is a whale shark themed exhibition built inside mobile containers. It travels across Taiwan, carrying the deep blue ocean, whale shark stories, and real research into the city. Visitors do not have to travel to the coast to meet the ocean on its own terms; the exhibition brings the encounter to them.
Inside, the experience follows the perspective of a whale shark. That viewpoint guides visitors through the world the whale shark inhabits and invites them to reconsider the connection between humans and the ocean. The exhibition combines an immersive narrative with research content, making it more than a static display. Because every encounter can be the beginning of a change.
The mobile container format is what sets this exhibition apart from fixed museum or aquarium displays. It allows the exhibition to move between cities and appear in urban spaces where marine-themed programming may not otherwise reach. For anyone curious about whale sharks, ocean conservation, or simply the experience of stepping into another world, this is a chance to do so without leaving the city.

Pier 2 is an arts district in Kaohsiung’s harbor area, housed in a row of former port warehouses. These buildings were used for shipping and storage for decades before the port activity shifted. Rather than demolish them, the city converted the empty structures into galleries and event spaces. The old brick shells remain recognizable, and the complex keeps the scale and atmosphere of its industrial past.
The district now includes exhibition halls, outdoor plazas, and a network of walkways between the original buildings. Its permanent works and rotating shows feature Taiwanese and international artists, and much of the art is sited outdoors, where it is visible to anyone passing through. Around the exhibition spaces are cafés, small shops, and temporary stalls, so the area functions as a neighborhood destination rather than a single venue.
The “Starry Giant by the Sea” Whale Shark Exhibition is held here partly because of the site’s size and partly because of its relation to the waterfront. The warehouses have enough floor area for a large installation, while the open courtyards and nearby harbor keep the event connected to its subject. Pier 2 does not isolate art from its surroundings; the working port, the sea wall, and the industrial architecture are all part of the setting, and the exhibition uses that context directly.
