What is madanggeuk?
Madanggeuk is a Korean performing art whose name translates roughly as “yard drama.” The word comes from madang (an open courtyard or village square) and geuk (drama or play). As the name suggests, it is performed outdoors, usually in a public space where the audience surrounds the performance on all sides.
A madanggeuk performance combines several older traditions: storytelling, music, dance, acrobatics, and satire. Performers use drums such as the janggu, the small gong called kkwaenggwari, and deliberately exaggerated movements and vocal styles. The staging is not centered on a fixed stage or a seated auditorium. The actors work in the middle of the crowd, and the crowd’s reactions are part of the performance. Performers may pause for laughter, challenge individual spectators to respond, or bring someone into the action for a scene. This is not merely audience engagement; it is the basic arrangement of the form.
Madanggeuk draws from pansori and traditional mask dances, but it is distinct from those older forms in how directly it addresses its audience. Its recurring subjects include the daily lives of ordinary people, the absurdities of social hierarchy, and the misuse of power. These themes are treated with humor, but the humor is not decorative. It gives the performers a way to make a point without reducing the performance to a lecture.
