What is Kaohsiung famous for?
Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s largest port city and has long been a center of heavy industry, particularly shipbuilding, steel, and petrochemicals. Over the past two decades, the city has also developed a visible cultural sector, much of it along the waterfront. The Love River runs through the city center and offers paths, cycling routes, and boat rides. Nearby, the Pier-2 Art Center occupies former port warehouses, with exhibition halls, artist studios, and large outdoor installations. The 85 Sky Tower is one of the city’s most recognizable buildings, and its observation deck provides views of the harbor. Kaohsiung’s climate is warm for most of the year, and its harbor area includes ferry connections to Cijin Island and other coastal districts. In 2026, the city will host the Kaohsiung Fashion Awards, an event that reflects a broader effort to develop fashion and design alongside an economy still rooted in manufacturing.
