Born in 1999 from the passion of local volunteers, the Machitobi Festa (literally "Town Jumping Festival") aimed to revitalize Kagurazaka through art and culture. What began as "A Museum That Jumped Out into the Town" has blossomed into a beloved tradition, attracting both locals and visitors alike.

A Feast for the Senses:

Over three weeks, Kagurazaka comes alive with a kaleidoscope of events. Immerse yourself in traditional Japanese arts like Noh, tea ceremonies, braiding, and rakugo. Tap your feet to the rhythm of street performances, from lively waiter races and Awa dance to the whimsical monster cat parade and music concerts. The grand finale on November 3rd features the highly anticipated "Drawing on the Slope/Pasting Pictures on the Slope" event. Can’t Make it to Kagurazaka? Join the Fun Online!

Even if you can’t attend in person, you can still participate in the "Drawing on the Slope" event. Simply snap a photo of your artwork and submit it online. The executive committee will print and display your masterpiece on the street. Plus, for every online entry, ¥500 will be donated to a children’s cafeteria in Shinjuku Ward – a beautiful way to share your creativity and support a worthy cause.

More than just a competition, the event fosters cross-cultural exchange, allowing musicians from diverse backgrounds to connect, collaborate, and share their unique artistry.

Finalists will receive the opportunity to perform on free busking stages throughout Gwangju’s charming old downtown areas, including Chungjang-ro, Dongmyeong-dong, and Guseo-cheong. The festival also features after-parties and Gwangju tourism familiarization tours, providing further opportunities for musical growth and international networking.

This year’s event coincides with the "Asia Music Summit in Gwangju," an international conference bringing together leading music industry experts and talented musicians to discuss the future of the Asian music industry. Journey back in time and imagine the elegant banquets enjoyed by feudal lords under the soft glow of autumn’s embrace.

Event Highlights

Illuminations and Projections:

  • Horaijima (Penglai Island) Light-up: Inspired by Chinese Taoist beliefs, the illuminated Horaijima, symbolizing eternal youth and longevity, graces the garden’s central pond.
  • One Pine Tree Light-up: The majestic branches of a pine tree, modeled after the famed Karasaki Pine of Lake Biwa, will be bathed in light.
  • Karamon Gate Light-up: The usually closed Karamon Gate will be opened and illuminated, creating a solemn and majestic atmosphere. Yano lights will illuminate the Kiso Road leading to the large pond, their reflections dancing on the water’s surface. (Please note: Passing through the Karamon Gate is not permitted.)
  • Engetsukyo Bridge Projection Mapping: Admire the Engetsukyo Bridge, said to be designed by Ming Dynasty Confucian scholar Zhu Shunshui. Named for its moon-like reflection on the water, the bridge will serve as a canvas for a captivating projection mapping display, showcasing 395 years of Koishikawa Korakuen Garden’s history.
  • Tsuijibei (Earthen Wall) Shadow Pictures: Delight in shadow pictures related to the garden, projected onto the long earthen wall stretching from the inner garden to the pine grove.

Special Events:

  • Lantern Floating (October 6th only): Celebrate "Lan(10)tern(6)" Day with a truly unforgettable experience. Flickering lanterns will drift across the large pond, creating a mesmerizing and fantastical scene.

Edo Period Festivities:

  • Traditional Performing Arts: Experience the "Bustle of Edo’s Castle Town" with traditional performing arts from the Edo period, presented on the Lawn Plaza. Performances include Kanda Bayashi & Kotobuki Shishi, Edo Daikagura, and Oedo Tamasudare.
  • Food & Drink/Goods Sales: Indulge in "Wa" (Japanese-style) light meals and drinks, including "Sanpuku Dango," three dumplings symbolizing good fortune, happiness, and wealth. These will be available around the One Pine Tree and in the Pine Grove.
