Seongnam-dong Coffee Festival
🗓️ 2026.10.30 ~ 2026.11.01
Held every autumn in the Seongnam-dong neighborhood of Ulsan, the Seongnam-dong Coffee Festival is a citizen-participatory cultural festival for everyone who loves coffee. It is planned and operated jointly by local merchants in the Seongnam-dong area and coffee industry professionals, a collaboration that grounds the festival in both the local community and professional coffee expertise. The program includes hand-drip demonstrations, latte art experiences, brewing competitions, and tasting events for various coffee brands, along with a wider lineup of performances, family activities, and a food market.
A neighborhood shaped by coffee culture
The festival’s location is not arbitrary. Seongnam-dong gained cultural significance after its designation as an industrial city district, when young people gathered there to cultivate a culture of literature and romance centered around the area’s coffee houses—the dabang. That heritage provides the backdrop for a festival that has established itself as an open event where people of all ages can participate, featuring skilled baristas from across the country, experience booths for families, live performances, and a food market.
Program highlights
The three-day schedule combines competition, hands-on learning, and entertainment:
-
Coffee Competitions (Brewing, Latte Art) – Baristas compete in brewing and latte art, demonstrating technical skill and creativity before a live audience.
-
Coffee Promotional Tasting and Sales – Visitors can sample and purchase offerings from a variety of coffee brands represented on site.
-
Coffee Experience Events (Extraction, Roasting, Latte Art) – Participants can try hand-drip extraction, roasting, and latte art firsthand.
-
Other Experience Events – Family-friendly participatory activities include face painting, balloon art, and projects using coffee grounds and other coffee byproducts.

What is Ulsan famous for?
Ulsan is known for its concentration of heavy industry. It is South Korea’s main center for shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing, and petrochemicals, with large facilities belonging to companies such as Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Motor. It has been called the Industrial Capital of Korea, and its port is among the busiest in the world by cargo volume. The industrial complexes and refineries are prominent features of the city’s skyline and major contributors to its economy.
The city also has a less industrial side. It sits on the southeastern coast, where the Taehwa River flows into the sea, and offers beaches, coastal cliffs, and the shoreline trails of Daewangam Park. The waters off Ulsan are one of the few places in South Korea where migrating whales can be observed. The annual Ulsan Whale Festival draws on that maritime history, with events centered on the city’s relationship to the sea and its former whaling economy.
In recent years, cafés have become a more visible part of Ulsan’s public life. Specialty coffee shops and local roasters have opened in former industrial districts and along the riverside, giving those areas new pedestrian and social space. The 2026 Ulsan Seongnam-dong Coffee Festival is planned as a showcase for this emerging scene. It reflects a broader change: Ulsan is still an industrial city, but it is also developing the kind of amenities and leisure activities that were not part of its earlier identity.
