Celebrate Xiang Xiang in Tokyo: Panda Exhibition & Book Release (March 2025)

"Princess Xiang Xiang, Beloved in Japan & China" Book Release Commemorative "Grand Panda Exhibition"

To mark the publication of "Princess Xiang Xiang, Beloved in Japan & China," a "Grand Panda Exhibition" will be held at the JMF Building Takadanobaba 01, near Takadanobaba Station in Tokyo, from March 17th to March 30th, 2025. This event offers a multifaceted celebration of the giant panda Xiang Xiang, featuring photography, art, workshops, and even themed refreshments.

A Multifaceted Celebration of Xiang Xiang

The exhibition promises a comprehensive experience for panda enthusiasts. Attendees can expect:

  • Photo Exhibition: A panel display showcasing photographs from the newly released book. The images are the work of three accomplished photographers: Takahiro Takauji, who has documented pandas at Ueno Zoo daily for 12 years; and Zhou Mengqi and Deng Yishen, two internationally recognized wildlife photographers. Zhou’s photographs, in particular, are being published in a book in Japan for the first time, offering a unique and detailed perspective.

  • Merchandise Sales:

    • Artist Works: Original pieces inspired by Xiang Xiang, created by three artists represented by Gallery HANNA, will be available for purchase. These works were commissioned specifically for this exhibition, making them exclusive collectibles.
    • Panda Goods: A diverse selection of panda-themed merchandise will be on offer, ranging from items featuring traditional Chinese farmer painting styles to those with a more surreal aesthetic.
  • Workshop: Attendees will have the opportunity to create their own unique panda-themed goods in a hands-on workshop. Advance reservations are required, and tickets can be purchased through the Workshop Ticket Purchase Site. No prior experience or materials are needed.

  • Cafe: The popular Chinese tea cafe "Kanro" from Nishi-Waseda will operate a booth, providing event-exclusive Chinese teas and sweets. This offers a chance to relax and enjoy refreshments in a panda-filled environment.

In addition to these features, a life-sized Xiang Xiang photo spot will be set up within the facility, providing a memorable photo opportunity for visitors.

Who is Xiang Xiang?

Xiang Xiang is a giant panda born at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, Japan, in June 2017. As the first panda cub born at the zoo in five years, she attracted significant public interest. Her playful behavior and appearance have made her a popular figure both in Japan and internationally.

The name Xiang Xiang, meaning "fragrance" or "popular" in Chinese, was selected through a public vote, indicating the widespread interest she has generated. Over time, Xiang Xiang has become a representative figure for wildlife conservation, emphasizing the need to protect endangered species and their environments.

An exhibition and book release scheduled for March 2025 will focus on Xiang Xiang’s influence and the ongoing efforts to conserve giant pandas. Through photographs, narratives, and interactive displays, visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Xiang Xiang’s life and the essential role of zoos and conservation initiatives in preserving these animals.
