Chuseok, often called Korean Thanksgiving, is one of South Korea’s major traditional holidays. It marks the autumn harvest and includes ceremonies of thanks to ancestors. The holiday falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar, which usually places it in late September or early October.

In the days before Chuseok, roads and train stations fill with people traveling to their hometowns. Families gather for charye, a memorial rite in which food and drink are arranged on a table as offerings to ancestors. The preparation is communal, and the meal afterward is shared by the family. A signature dish is songpyeon, half-moon-shaped rice cakes stuffed with sesame seeds, red beans, or chestnuts.
