Koishikawa Korakuen Garden Autumn Nights 2024: Illuminations, Projections, and Lantern Spectacle

Experience the Magic of Autumn Nights at Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

Step into an Illuminated World of History and Wonder

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden, in collaboration with Tokyo Dome City, invites you to a special limited-time event: "Autumn Nights at Koishikawa Korakuen Garden." Expanding on the success of previous years, this year’s event promises an even more enchanting experience. Beyond the breathtaking illuminations, visitors can immerse themselves in projected displays tracing the garden’s rich history, enjoy delicious food and drinks, and, on Sunday, October 6th, witness the magical spectacle of floating lanterns. Journey back in time and imagine the elegant banquets enjoyed by feudal lords under the soft glow of autumn’s embrace.

Event Highlights

Illuminations and Projections:

  • Horaijima (Penglai Island) Light-up: Inspired by Chinese Taoist beliefs, the illuminated Horaijima, symbolizing eternal youth and longevity, graces the garden’s central pond.
  • One Pine Tree Light-up: The majestic branches of a pine tree, modeled after the famed Karasaki Pine of Lake Biwa, will be bathed in light.
  • Karamon Gate Light-up: The usually closed Karamon Gate will be opened and illuminated, creating a solemn and majestic atmosphere. Yano lights will illuminate the Kiso Road leading to the large pond, their reflections dancing on the water’s surface. (Please note: Passing through the Karamon Gate is not permitted.)
  • Engetsukyo Bridge Projection Mapping: Admire the Engetsukyo Bridge, said to be designed by Ming Dynasty Confucian scholar Zhu Shunshui. Named for its moon-like reflection on the water, the bridge will serve as a canvas for a captivating projection mapping display, showcasing 395 years of Koishikawa Korakuen Garden’s history.
  • Tsuijibei (Earthen Wall) Shadow Pictures: Delight in shadow pictures related to the garden, projected onto the long earthen wall stretching from the inner garden to the pine grove.

Special Events:

  • Lantern Floating (October 6th only): Celebrate "Lan(10)tern(6)" Day with a truly unforgettable experience. Flickering lanterns will drift across the large pond, creating a mesmerizing and fantastical scene.

Edo Period Festivities:

  • Traditional Performing Arts: Experience the "Bustle of Edo’s Castle Town" with traditional performing arts from the Edo period, presented on the Lawn Plaza. Performances include Kanda Bayashi & Kotobuki Shishi, Edo Daikagura, and Oedo Tamasudare.
  • Food & Drink/Goods Sales: Indulge in "Wa" (Japanese-style) light meals and drinks, including "Sanpuku Dango," three dumplings symbolizing good fortune, happiness, and wealth. These will be available around the One Pine Tree and in the Pine Grove.

A Bread Lover’s Dream

This isn’t your typical afternoon tea. Instead of the usual scones and finger sandwiches, the "Autumn Picnic Petit Boulangerie" puts the spotlight on artisanal breads. The star of the show is the assortment of freshly baked breads, crafted with seasonal ingredients and flavors that capture the essence of autumn.

Imagine savoring miniature pumpkin rolls, crusty rye bread topped with fig jam, and delicate brioche buns filled with spiced apple compote. Each bite is a celebration of the season’s bounty.

A Feast for the Eyes and the Palate

The presentation of the afternoon tea is as delightful as the food itself. The breads and accompanying treats are artfully arranged in a charming wooden box, designed to evoke the feeling of a leisurely autumn picnic. The box is filled with colorful fall foliage and other decorative elements that enhance the overall experience.

Beyond Bread: Sweet and Savory Delights

While bread takes center stage, the "Autumn Picnic Petit Boulangerie" also features a selection of sweet and savory accompaniments to complement the bread selection. Guests can enjoy a variety of pastries, such as mini fruit tarts and chocolate éclairs, as well as savory bites like quiche and mini sandwiches.

A Perfect Autumn Escape

Whether you’re a bread enthusiast or simply looking for a unique and memorable afternoon tea experience, the "Autumn Picnic Petit Boulangerie" at Hilton Tokyo is sure to delight. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the arrival of autumn in style.
