What is Odaiba?
Odaiba is a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, originally built in the 1850s as a series of fortress batteries to protect the city from sea attack. The land was later redeveloped, and the district now serves as a waterfront commercial and leisure area connected to central Tokyo by the Rainbow Bridge and several rail and subway lines.
The island contains a number of large shopping complexes, including DiverCity and Aqua City. A full-scale Unicorn Gundam statue stands outside DiverCity, and the digital-art collective teamLab has a permanent exhibition on the waterfront. The promenade along the bay offers clear views of the Tokyo skyline and the bridge; on summer evenings it is also noticeably cooler than much of the city.
For the Tokyo Rainbow Summer Festival 2026, Odaiba’s open spaces and existing infrastructure will host a digital-oriented summer program.
