Koganei Park’s Flower and Light Movement 2024: Enchanting Night Walks & Illuminated Art (Nov 23rd – Dec 8th)

Koganei Park's Flower and Light Movement 2024: Enchanting Night Walks & Illuminated Art (Nov 23rd - Dec 8th)

Experience the Magic of Koganei Park After Dark: Flower and Light Movement

Get ready to be enchanted! Koganei Park is transforming into a nocturnal wonderland this autumn with the inaugural Flower and Light Movement: Koganei Park Night Park Wonder. From November 23rd to December 8th, 2024, experience the park’s beauty in a whole new light – literally!

This unique event illuminates a 600m path from the park’s west entrance to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum front plaza, featuring six dazzling illuminated installations. Unlike previous light displays in the park, this event weaves together light art, historical narratives, and interactive workshops to create a truly immersive experience.

What Awaits You:

Stroll Down a Golden Runway: Forget red carpets – imagine a shimmering, 15m-long "golden runway" crafted from art flowers, leading you towards the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. Overhead, a 3.5m high ginkgo arch, also made of art flowers and adorned with glowing pampas grass and autumn blooms, completes this breathtaking autumnal scene. This unique installation replaces the typical autumn foliage with a vibrant, artistic interpretation.

Meet Koganei Kojiro in Nebuta Form: Discover the story of "Koganei Kojiro," a local folk hero, brought to life through a dynamic Nebuta display by award-winning artist Shun’ichi Kitamura. This original Nebuta, enhanced by a backdrop of art flowers, depicts key moments from Kojiro’s life, including the well he built for the residents of Miyake Island, a testament to Koganei City’s friendship with Miyake Village. This captivating installation blends history, art, and local lore.

Witness the Future of Cherry Blossoms: The "Sakura-no-Sono" (Cherry Blossom Garden) will glow with a special light installation celebrating the 20+ years of dedication by the "Koganei Park Sakuramori no Kai" volunteer group. Different light patterns illuminate old trees, maturing trees, and saplings, highlighting the continuous cycle of growth and the future of these beloved cherry blossoms.

Bathe in the Illuminated Perennial Garden: The park’s Perennial Garden takes on a new dimension as carefully placed lights highlight the varied heights of pampas grass, perennials, and annuals, creating a vibrant and radiant spectacle.

Ride the Illuminated Carousel: Located at the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum Front Plaza, a hand-cranked carousel, adorned with autumn leaves and lush greenery, evokes a nostalgic charm. Three uniquely designed wooden horses, crafted by different artists, await riders.

  • Carousel Operating Hours: Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the event, 1:30 PM – 8:30 PM (last entry at 7:30 PM). Free for the first 100 visitors who complete a questionnaire (for elementary school students and above).

Admire the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum by Night: The visitor center (former Koukaden), flanked by illuminated olive trees, and the surrounding stone steps and granite will be bathed in light, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. This historical building, originally built in 1940 and relocated to the park in 1941, will stand in elegant contrast to the modern art installations.

Creative Workshops:

Illuminated Artwork Creation Workshop: Join lighting sculptor Tadaharu Kawamura to create your own illuminated artwork using fallen leaves collected from within Koganei Park.

What are Osaka’s historic waterways?

Osaka, known for its rich history and cultural heritage, has numerous historic waterways. These waterways have played a significant role in the city’s development and economy. Some of the most notable historic waterways in Osaka include:

  1. Dōtonbori Canal: Perhaps the most famous waterway in Osaka, the Dōtonbori Canal runs through the bustling entertainment district of Dōtonbori. It was constructed in the early 17th century and has been a central hub for commerce and entertainment ever since.

  2. Yodo River: Serving as a critical artery for trade and transportation, the Yodo River connects Osaka to Kyoto and has historically been vital for the movement of goods and people.

  3. Aji River: Flowing into Osaka Bay, the Aji River has played an essential role in connecting Osaka to maritime trade routes.

  4. Neya River: Historically important for transporting goods from Osaka to other parts of Japan, the Neya River helped establish Osaka as a commercial center.

  5. Tosabori and Dojima Rivers: These parallel rivers run through the heart of Osaka’s business district and were historically filled with warehouses and merchant offices, aiding in the city’s economic prowess.

  6. O River: This river was important historically for its role in connecting central Osaka with the Yodo River and facilitating transportation and commerce.

These waterways have been central to Osaka’s identity, helping it earn the nickname "The City of Water." They used to be even more extensive before modern urban development led to the filling in of many of these historic canals and rivers. Today, they remain an integral part of the city’s landscape and a testament to its historical importance in trade and culture.
