The Great Capcom Exhibition – Game Creation that Charms the World (March 20 – June 22)
Since its establishment in 1983, Osaka-headquartered Capcom has evolved into a globally recognized game software developer. The company is responsible for numerous influential titles, including the Street Fighter series, which significantly shaped the history of competitive fighting games; the Resident Evil series, widely regarded as a landmark achievement in survival horror; and the Monster Hunter series, a franchise that achieved widespread social phenomenon status. This comprehensive exhibition offers an in-depth look into Capcom’s creative world, presenting planning documents, original concept art from developers, graphic works like posters and packaging, interactive installations, and insights into the latest technologies employed. Visitors will gain a unique perspective on the intricate process of game creation, appreciating the imagination and technical skill involved, thereby fostering a renewed appreciation for Japan’s prominent game culture.
The exhibition features several distinct areas. In the "Characters" section, attendees can view development materials, such as illustrations and detailed setting images, for characters featured across Capcom’s major franchises. A highlight is the "Monster Hunter Super 3D Encyclopedia," an immersive experience that showcases the developers’ creativity in realistically rendering natural environments and the monsters adapted to them. This is achieved through a combination of projection mapping and augmented reality (AR) technology applied to detailed field models representing the world of Monster Hunter.
Additionally, the "Resident Evil New Walkthrough Experience" provides an innovative installation allowing visitors to engage with the world of Resident Evil in a novel way. Images of zombies and other creatures are projected exclusively onto wall surfaces targeted by special sensors, creating a unique interactive environment. (This specific experience is planned for exhibition only at the Osaka and Tokyo venues).
Exclusive merchandise will be available for purchase. Items include clear files designed with motifs from game planning documents and collectible Kewpie® dolls dressed as iconic Capcom characters. Furthermore, attendees will find goods unique to the Osaka venue, such as an acrylic keychain featuring an Airou character costumed as "SHIP’S CAT (Muse)"—a symbol of the Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka—and T-shirts incorporating game characters within the museum’s distinctive symbol mark.
