What is Gyoza?
Gyoza are Japanese dumplings filled with a mixture of ground meat, vegetables, and seasonings. They originated from the Chinese jiaozi but have been adapted to suit Japanese tastes. A typical filling includes ground pork, cabbage, garlic, ginger, and green onions, seasoned with soy sauce and sesame oil.
The cooking method for gyoza involves pan-frying to create a crispy bottom, followed by steaming to cook the filling and keep the wrapper tender. This combination of textures is a key feature of gyoza.
Gyoza are usually served with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce, rice vinegar, and chili oil. They can be enjoyed as an appetizer, side dish, or main course. Their flavor and versatility make them a good match with various beverages, such as those featured at the Osaka Craft Gyoza Fest & Hanshin Beer Bar 2025. Whether you’re familiar with gyoza or trying them for the first time, the festival is an opportunity to explore different varieties and find your preferred flavors.
