What is Jeongwol Daeboreum?
Jeongwol Daeboreum, or the Great Full Moon Festival, is a Korean holiday observed on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It celebrates the first full moon of the lunar new year and is a time for communities to gather and celebrate themes of abundance, health, and good fortune. The festival is rich with customs and rituals that reflect Korean cultural traditions.
A notable custom is the consumption of specific foods believed to bring luck and protect against misfortune. "Bureom," a selection of nuts, is cracked open with teeth to symbolize breaking away from bad luck. "Ogokbap," a five-grain rice dish, signifies prosperity. Another tradition is "daljip taeugi," where straw heaps are burned to dispel bad luck and invite positive energy.
The festival also features traditional games and activities like "juldarigi" (tug-of-war) and "ganggangsullae" (a circle dance), which promote community spirit and enjoyment. Jeongwol Daeboreum is a lively event that honors the lunar calendar while reinforcing communal ties and cultural heritage.
