Kishu Ume Plum Wine Festival 2025 in Asakusa: Taste 100+ Varieties of Wakayama Plum Wine

Kishu Ume Plum Wine Festival 2025

100 Kinds of Exquisite Plum Wine from Wakayama Prefecture!

The "Kishu Ume Plum Wine Festival 2025" will be held at Ume to Hoshi in Asakusa, offering a unique opportunity to sample a wide array of plum wines. This event is a collaboration between the "Ume Plum Wine Tourism Project Executive Committee" of Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, known as the home of Kishu Ume plums, and Asakusa’s own "Ume to Hoshi." Building on the success of the inaugural event in February of the previous year, this second iteration promises an even more extensive selection.

The recent surge in plum wine’s popularity is exemplified by the opening of "Ume Plum Wine Enjoyment Place Umeko" in front of Kii-Tanabe Station late last year. This establishment boasts a collection of over 100 kinds of plum wine from Wakayama Prefecture, allowing for comparative tastings, original cocktail creations, and more. The "Ume Plum Wine Festival 2025" mirrors this impressive selection, presenting around 100 varieties of plum wine.

What is Kishu Ume Plum Wine?

Kishu Ume plum wine, or umeshu, is a Japanese liqueur crafted from ume plums, sugar, and alcohol. It originates from Wakayama Prefecture, known for producing high-quality ume. This wine is appreciated for its sweet and tangy flavor. The ume plums are harvested when ripe, contributing to a rich taste. They are steeped in shochu or sake, allowing the flavors to blend over several months. The result is a smooth, fragrant drink that can be enjoyed on its own, over ice, or in cocktails. Kishu Ume plum wine holds cultural significance in Japan, often linked to hospitality and celebration.
