What is Rikugien Garden?

Rikugien Garden is a historic landscape garden located in the Bunkyo ward of Tokyo, Japan. Often regarded as one of Tokyo’s most exquisite traditional gardens, Rikugien was constructed during the Edo period, around 1700, for the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. The name "Rikugien" translates to "Garden of the Six Principles of Poetry," reflecting its origins as a strolling garden inspired by classic Japanese poetry.

Spanning nearly 9 hectares, the garden features a picturesque central pond, lush greenery, charming footpaths, and beautifully crafted hills and bridges. It is renowned for its tranquility and the intricate design that encourages visitors to embark on a poetic journey while walking through its diverse landscapes.

Rikugien is particularly famous for its seasonal beauty, with stunning displays of cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant maple leaves in autumn. During the autumn illumination event, the garden is adorned with lights, offering visitors a breathtaking spectacle of night views enhanced by innovative projection mapping techniques. This event transforms Rikugien into an enchanting wonderland, showcasing the garden’s timeless elegance under a new light.
