Celebrate Hangeul’s Legacy at the Dobong Hangeul Festival
Date: October 2nd – 9th, 2024
Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, a gift to the people from King Sejong, officially became the national language after the Gabo Reform in 1894. The Dobong Hangeul Festival honors the rich history of Hangeul—its protection, enjoyment, and revitalization from modernization through the Japanese colonial period and beyond. This festival holds special significance in Dobong-gu, the resting place of Princess Jeongui, King Sejong’s daughter and a key figure in the creation of Hangeul.
Held annually on Hangeul Day at Wondangsaem Park, the Dobong Hangeul Festival commemorates both Princess Jeongui and the Korean alphabet itself. It has become a flagship local cultural event, celebrating the legacy of Dobong-gu’s historical figures connected to Hangeul. These include Princess Jeongui, Jeon Hyeong-pil (who preserved the Hunminjeongeum), and Jeong In-bo (a writer of Hangeul songs and scholar of Korean national spirit). The festival is a collaborative effort, brought to life by these historical figures and the vibrant local community.
