Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu (Cornus Fruit) Blossom Festival

The Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu Blossom Festival, held in Baeksa-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant beauty of sansuyu (cornelian cherry) trees. What sets this festival apart is the sheer concentration of these trees, many of which are over a century old, blanketing the village in a spectacle of color. The festival is scheduled to take place from the 28th to the 30th of March 2025.

A Natural Spectacle

Baeksa-myeon is home to a remarkable colony of sansuyu trees, cultivated by local farmers at the foot of Wonjeoksan Mountain. The villages of Songmal-ri, Dorip-ri, Gyeongsari, and Joeup-ri are all adorned with these trees, but Dorip-ri stands out as the nation’s leading sansuyu producing area. This creates a truly immersive experience, with yellow blossoms transforming the landscape in early spring, followed by a vibrant display of red fruits in autumn.

What is Sansuyu (Cornelian Cherry)?

Sansuyu, or the Cornelian cherry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree from the dogwood family, native to Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It holds a notable place in Korean culture and horticulture. The plant is recognized for its yellow blossoms that signal the start of spring, typically blooming in March.

Apart from its visual appeal, the Cornelian cherry produces small, bright red fruits that ripen in late summer. These berries are high in vitamin C and antioxidants, making them a common ingredient in traditional Korean remedies and culinary dishes. They are often used to make teas, jams, and wines, appreciated for their tart flavor and potential health benefits.

In Korea, the Sansuyu tree symbolizes resilience and renewal. Its ability to thrive in various conditions and its early blooming nature make it a cherished sign of spring. The Icheon Baeksa Sansuyu Blossom Festival celebrates this plant, attracting visitors to enjoy its beauty and the traditions associated with it.

Within the restaurant’s walls, a captivating spring scene is meticulously recreated. Approximately 33 square meters of the interior are adorned with an impressive display of 8,000 artificial cherry blossoms, interwoven with around 1,000 LED lights. This immersive installation creates a fantastical ambiance, allowing for a leisurely appreciation of the illuminated "night cherry blossoms" regardless of external conditions.

Culinary Delights to Complement the Scenery

The event features a selection of limited-time cherry blossom cocktails, crafted using cherry syrup and liqueur. Non-alcoholic options are thoughtfully provided, ensuring that all guests can partake in the thematic beverages. Complementing the cherry blossom theme, the menu also includes cocktails and sweets made with fresh strawberries, available exclusively during this period.

Beyond the seasonal specials, the bar boasts an extensive drink menu. With over 80 original cocktail creations and more than 40 non-alcoholic choices (resulting in a total selection exceeding 200 beverages!), there’s a suitable option for every palate. This inclusive approach makes the event ideal for various social gatherings, from dates to evenings out with friends. Due to potential crowding, particularly on certain days and times, making a reservation is highly recommended, even if only securing seating.

What is Hanami?

Hanami is a Japanese tradition centered around the appreciation of cherry blossoms, or sakura. This practice, which dates back centuries, occurs in the spring when cherry trees bloom, transforming landscapes with their pink and white flowers. Hanami is both a visual and social event, where people gather under the trees for picnics, sharing food and drinks, and marking the arrival of spring. It is an integral part of Japanese culture, reflecting the transient nature of life and the beauty of the present moment. While typically enjoyed outdoors, hanami can also be experienced in various settings, such as indoor venues like SUN Tama Bar, which offer a different perspective on this cherished tradition.

What was the Daegaya Kingdom?

The Daegaya Kingdom was a notable city-state during Korea’s Three Kingdoms period, thriving from the 5th to the 6th century. Situated in the southern Korean Peninsula, in present-day Goryeong County, Daegaya was part of the Gaya confederacy, a collection of small polities that significantly influenced the region’s cultural and political dynamics. Renowned for its ironworking technology, Daegaya was a hub of trade and craftsmanship, producing sought-after iron goods for neighboring kingdoms.

Daegaya’s position along the Nakdong River enabled trade and cultural exchanges with other Korean states, as well as Japan and China. This interaction enriched the kingdom’s cultural heritage, reflected in its distinctive pottery, burial practices, and earthen fortifications. Despite its accomplishments, Daegaya was eventually absorbed by the expanding Silla Kingdom in the mid-6th century, becoming part of the unified Silla state.

Today, the legacy of the Daegaya Kingdom is preserved through archaeological sites and cultural events, such as the Goryeong Daegaya Festival, which provide insights into the kingdom’s history and its lasting impact on Korean culture.
