What is Cat Day in Japan?

Cat Day in Japan, observed on February 22nd, is a day dedicated to celebrating cats. The date was chosen because the numbers "2-2-2" can be pronounced as "ni-ni-ni," which resembles "nyan-nyan-nyan," the Japanese sound for a cat’s meow. This linguistic playfulness has made Cat Day popular among cat lovers in Japan. On this day, people often share pictures of their cats on social media, treat their pets to special snacks, and engage in cat-themed events. The celebration highlights Japan’s cultural fondness for cats, which are regarded as symbols of good fortune and companionship.

What is Kishu Ume Plum Wine?

Kishu Ume plum wine, or umeshu, is a Japanese liqueur crafted from ume plums, sugar, and alcohol. It originates from Wakayama Prefecture, known for producing high-quality ume. This wine is appreciated for its sweet and tangy flavor. The ume plums are harvested when ripe, contributing to a rich taste. They are steeped in shochu or sake, allowing the flavors to blend over several months. The result is a smooth, fragrant drink that can be enjoyed on its own, over ice, or in cocktails.
