Mukojima Hyakkaen Garden, established in the late Edo period, was originally a renowned plum blossom viewing spot, affectionately nicknamed "Shin Ume-yashiki" (New Plum Garden). It boasted approximately 360 plum trees. Today, the garden continues this legacy, showcasing nearly 20 varieties of plum blossoms, including Tsuki-kage, Hatsukari, Shira-kaga, Michi-shirebe, and Kagoshima-beni. During the peak viewing season, the garden hosts a series of events designed to immerse visitors in both the beauty of the blossoms and the rich culture of the Edo period.

The Plum Blossom Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience a refined, early spring moment, surrounded by the delicate fragrance of plum blossoms and the ambiance of Edo.

Festival Events

A variety of events, detailed below, are scheduled throughout the festival, allowing visitors to engage with Edo culture and appreciate the natural beauty of the garden.

Plum Blossom Poetry 📝 (Cancelled in case of inclement weather)

Visitors are invited to compose haiku and waka poems inspired by the plum blossoms, contributing their verses to a haiku notebook.

Edo Street Performance 🎭 (Cancelled in case of rain)

In an effort to utilize and promote the cultural properties of Buyeo, a region steeped in the splendid history of Sabi Baekje, the 2025 Buyeo National Heritage Night, themed ‘Sabi Tile Spring’, represents a collaborative endeavor between the local government and its citizens. This program is specifically designed to enhance the development of representative tourism content and contribute to the revitalization of the local economy. It offers a unique opportunity to enjoy cultural facilities during the nighttime, focusing on the area around Jeongnimsa Temple Site, a testament to the beautiful cultural heritage of Baekje.

What was the Baekje Kingdom?

The Baekje Kingdom was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, alongside Goguryeo and Silla, and it played a significant role in the early history of the Korean Peninsula. Established in 18 BCE by King Onjo, a descendant of the legendary figure Jumong, Baekje was located in the southwestern part of the peninsula. Its capital eventually moved to Sabi (modern-day Buyeo) in 538 CE.

Baekje is noted for its cultural contributions and its role as a conduit for cultural exchange between Korea, China, and Japan. The kingdom facilitated the spread of Buddhism and Chinese culture and technology to Japan, influencing the development of Japanese civilization. Baekje’s artisans were known for their craftsmanship, producing pottery, sculptures, and architectural works that combined local and foreign elements.

The kingdom had a complex political system and engaged in trade and diplomacy with neighboring states. Despite its achievements, Baekje faced ongoing military threats from Goguryeo and Silla. In 660 CE, Baekje was conquered by a coalition of Silla and Tang Dynasty forces, ending its independence.

Special Exhibition: "Three Great Spears of Japan"

A special exhibition, "Three Great Spears of Japan", will be held at Nagoya Swords World from Saturday, March 22, 2025, to Sunday, June 1, 2025.

The "Three Great Spears of Japan Reproduction Project"—an ambitious endeavor to recreate the three famously beautiful spears, Tonbokiri, Otegine, and Nihongo, using the techniques of Japan’s top swordsmiths—has been underway at the museum. Five years after the project’s launch, replicas of the Three Great Spears of Japan, all crafted by the same swordsmith, will be exhibited.

The individual responsible for the creation of the replicas of the Three Great Spears of Japan is Mr. Kohei Uebayashi, who holds the highest rank of modern swordsmith, "Mukansa," and is also a designated Important Intangible Cultural Property holder of Yamagata Prefecture. The elaborate carvings on the Nihongo blade were created by Mr. Sōju Yanagimura, a sculptor. The replicas of the Three Great Spears of Japan have now been completed as a result of the combined efforts of these two leading modern swordsmiths and sculptors.

In addition to the spears themselves, the exhibition will also feature swords and artifacts related to each spear and the warlords who wielded them. The Tonbokiri display will include swords of the Honda clan and a replica of Honda Tadakatsu’s armor. For Nihongo, swords related to the Kuroda clan and swords with prominent blade carvings will be on display. The Otegine section will exhibit swords made by Yoshimitsu, as well as swords related to the Yuki clan.
