After 13 years, Osaka welcomes back this iconic ukiyo-e artist with a comprehensive solo exhibition showcasing approximately 400 works. This isn’t just another exhibition; it’s a deep dive into Kuniyoshi’s genius, featuring not only his renowned woodblock prints of warriors, caricatures, and a wide array of subjects, but also rare and precious hand-painted pieces.

From Samurai Swagger to Whiskered Wonders: Explore Kuniyoshi’s Diverse World

Epic Heroes and Dramatic Battles:

Sotoma no Kourairi

Kuniyoshi, a master of the late Edo period, revolutionized the ukiyo-e genre. In his early 30s, his depictions of "Water Margin" heroes catapulted warrior pictures to the forefront of popular art, rivaling the then-dominant themes of beautiful women and actors. Experience his dynamic compositions, often spanning large, three-panel screens, capturing the most thrilling moments of these legendary tales. From his early breakthrough, the "Tsuzoku Suikoden Goketsu Hyakuhachinin no Hitori (One Person)" series, to his later masterpiece, the six-panel "Battle of Shijo Nawate" (displayed during the first exhibition period only), this exhibition gathers some of Kuniyoshi’s most iconic warrior prints.

The Purrfect Companion: Kuniyoshi’s Feline Fascination:

Fashionable Cat Transformations

A devoted cat lover, Kuniyoshi often incorporated his furry companions into his art. These weren’t just passive figures; Kuniyoshi’s cats took on human roles, mimicking popular actors or even becoming patrons of brothels, adding a touch of whimsy to his caricatures, actor portraits, and even pictures of beautiful women. Don’t miss the newly discovered work, "Ryuko Neko no Henka" (displayed throughout the entire exhibition period), a testament to Kuniyoshi’s unique observation and affection for his feline muses.

What is the Gojusan-tsugi?

The Gojusan-tsugi, often referred to as the "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," is a celebrated series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige. Created in the early 1830s, this series captures the scenic beauty and cultural vibrancy of the Tōkaidō road, the most important route connecting Edo (now Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period. The series features 55 prints, including views of the starting point in Edo, the 53 post stations along the route, and the endpoint in Kyoto.

Hiroshige’s Gojusan-tsugi is acclaimed for its exquisite depictions of Japan’s diverse landscapes, including bustling market towns, serene countryside, and dramatic coastal views. Each station is vividly brought to life with Hiroshige’s masterful use of color, perspective, and atmospheric effects, reflecting both the daily life and the ephemeral beauty of the natural world. Beyond mere geographical representation, the series offers a glimpse into the lives and travels of the people of Edo-period Japan, encapsulating moments of leisure, labor, and cultural rituals.

This artistic endeavor not only solidified Hiroshige’s reputation as a master of landscape prints but also contributed profoundly to the European art movement of Japonism in the 19th century. Today, the Gojusan-tsugi continues to be celebrated for its artistic innovation and its evocative portrayal of a journey through time and space.

What is Miyashita Park?

Miyashita Park, located in the heart of Tokyo’s bustling Shibuya district, is a modern urban oasis that beautifully blends nature, entertainment, and culture. Originally established as a public space in 1953, it underwent a significant transformation and reopened in its current form in 2020. The park seamlessly integrates lush green spaces with retail shops, dining options, and recreational facilities, making it a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists.

One of the unique features of Miyashita Park is its multi-level design. The park incorporates a rooftop area that offers stunning views of the surrounding cityscape, as well as venues for various activities such as skateboarding and seasonal events. This innovative space not only provides a retreat from the urban hustle but also serves as a platform for cultural exchange and community engagement.

Miyashita Park’s accessibility and diverse offerings make it a popular destination year-round. It hosts a wide range of events, from art exhibitions to live performances, which celebrate the spirit of diversity and inclusivity. During the Christmas season, the park transforms into a dazzling wonderland with enchanting light displays and festive decorations, inviting visitors to celebrate and connect with one another.
