What is sake?

Sake, often referred to as "nihonshu" in Japan, is a traditional Japanese alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice. It’s known for its subtle, nuanced flavors and is typically enjoyed in various settings, from casual gatherings to formal ceremonies. The production of sake involves a brewing process similar to beer, where polished rice is combined with water, yeast, and a mold called koji to convert the rice starches into sugars and, subsequently, alcohol. The resulting drink can vary greatly in taste, aroma, and texture, influenced by factors such as the type of rice used, the degree of polishing, and the specific brewing techniques employed. Sake is celebrated for its versatility, often paired with a wide range of foods, and can be enjoyed at different temperatures, from chilled to warm, depending on the variety and personal preference. In Japan, sake holds cultural significance and is often associated with rituals and festive occasions, making it a symbol of hospitality and celebration.

Standing tall at 8.4 meters, this isn’t your average Christmas tree. Constructed from a record-breaking 40,000 individual lenses, it’s one of Okitsu’s largest lens-based creations to date.

Crafted from incredibly lightweight and thin Fresnel lenses—each a mere 5.5cm in diameter and 0.3mm thick—the tree creates an ever-shifting spectacle of light and reflections. Every angle offers a new perspective, promising a visual experience unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Adding to the immersive experience, lens ornaments adorn the atrium space above the tree. The unique spiral architecture of Omotesando Hills allows you to admire the tree and its shimmering reflections from multiple vantage points. Capture the magic of Christmas through your own lens, and share the sparkling wonder with the world.

For an even closer look, a dedicated photo spot on the grand staircase offers the perfect opportunity to experience the brilliance and reflective qualities of the lenses up close. Enhance your shopping spree with a dazzling display of light and art.

*The photo spot is scheduled to be available starting November 14th (Thursday).
