Samrangseong Fortress History & Culture Festival 2024: Explore 5,000 Years of Korean History in Gangwon-do

Delve into Korea’s Past at the Samrangseong Fortress History and Culture Festival

Date: October 5th – 13th, 2024

Nestled around the serene Jeondeungsa Temple, the Samrangseong Fortress stands as a testament to Korea’s enduring spirit. Legend attributes its construction to the three sons of Dangun, built as a bulwark against foreign incursions. Its historical significance deepens during the Goryeo Dynasty, when it became a refuge against the Mongol invasion and the epicenter of the 120-day Daebuleop Jeongos Suryang resistance movement.

Samrangseong Fortress also served as the custodian of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty for an impressive 250 years. It witnessed the valiant victory against the French army in the Byeonginyangyo and echoed with the fervor of righteous army battles against the Japanese in the late Joseon Dynasty. This hallowed ground has borne witness to 5,000 years of Korean history, its stones whispering tales of resilience and national pride.

To honor this rich heritage and share it with the world, the Samrangseong History and Culture Festival unfolds annually, starting on the first Saturday of October. This year marks its remarkable 24th anniversary.
