Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival π¦
ποΈ March 14 – March 17, 2025
The Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival is an experiential festival that conveys the true taste of Yeongdeok snow crab, a regional delicacy with a rich history. During the reign of King Chungmok, the 29th king of Goryeo, Jeong Bang-pil was appointed as the first governor of Yeonghae. Upon inspecting the village, Governor Jeong tasted the Yeongdeok snow crab and praised its flavor. The crab’s legs, resembling bamboo, earned it the name "Daegae" (bamboo crab). According to historical records, Yeongdeok County designated Chayu Village as the origin of Daegae. This esteemed crustacean has been presented to royalty for a thousand years, a tradition that began when Wang Geon and Gyeon Hwon visited Chayu Village during their struggle for power.

What is Yeongdeok known for in Korean seafood culture?
Yeongdeok, a coastal county in North Gyeongsang Province, is well-known in Korean seafood culture for its snow crabs, or "daege." These crabs are appreciated for their sweet, tender meat and rich flavor, a result of the region’s cold, clean waters that provide an ideal habitat.
Yeongdeok’s reputation extends beyond the crabs themselves to the cultural practices associated with them. The annual Yeongdeok Snow Crab Festival highlights this connection, attracting visitors to enjoy crab-centered activities. The festival includes tasting freshly steamed crabs and engaging in traditional fishing experiences, offering insights into the local maritime heritage.
In addition, Yeongdeok’s seafood markets and restaurants cater to seafood enthusiasts with a variety of crab dishes. Whether in a spicy stew, grilled, or simply boiled with dipping sauces, snow crab dishes reflect the culinary skills and cultural traditions of Yeongdeok.
