Yeoju Daljip Burning Festival
ποΈ February 12, 2025
The Yeoju Daljip Burning Festival, held annually on Jeongwol Daeboreum – the fifteenth day of the first lunar month and the date of the first full moon of the lunar year – will take place at the Yeoju Dalmati Plaza. The centerpiece of this traditional Korean festival is the Daljip, a visually striking bonfire structure, measuring an impressive 15 meters in height and 12 meters in diameter, constructed from straw and wood.
In the lead-up to the festival, residents of Yeoju participate in a unique tradition, writing their hopes and aspirations for the upcoming year on wish papers. These heartfelt messages are then carefully tied to the Daljip, imbuing the structure with the collective wishes of the community. The festival grounds offer a variety of engaging activities for visitors of all ages, including horse riding experiences, crafting cans for the traditional Jwibulnori (fire swinging) game, and kite making.
The festival program is packed with a diverse range of performances, events, and hands-on activities designed to immerse attendees in Korean culture. Highlights include the symbolic burning of the Daljip, horse riding, kite flying, Jisinbalgi (a traditional ritual of treading on the earth to appease the earth god), Jwibulnori, and wish paper folding.

What is a Daljip?
A Daljip, meaning "moon house," is a traditional Korean structure made from straw, twigs, and other natural materials. It is built for the Daljip Burning Festival, which celebrates the first full moon of the lunar new year. The Daljip is conical, similar to a small hut or teepee, and is often decorated with colorful ornaments and wishes written on paper.
The burning of the Daljip is a symbolic act intended to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune for the year ahead. As the flames rise, participants gather to watch, often voicing their wishes into the night sky. The fire is believed to carry these wishes upward, promoting prosperity and happiness. This ritual not only serves as a spiritual cleansing but also strengthens community bonds, as people unite to celebrate and share their hopes for the future.
