What are Camellia flowers?
Camellia flowers are elegant, ornamental blooms that belong to the Theaceae family, native to eastern and southern Asia. Known for their lush, vividly colored petals ranging from white and pink to deep red, camellias are often associated with beauty and longevity. These evergreen shrubs or small trees bloom from late fall to early spring, providing a vibrant display during the colder months when few other plants flower.
The flowers are characterized by their symmetry and layered petals, resembling ornate, multi-layered roses. Camellias have been prized in gardens for centuries, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their cultural significance. In traditional Asian cultures, they symbolize admiration and perfection and have been featured prominently in art and literature.
Particularly associated with the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, which produces tea leaves, the genus also includes numerous cultivated varieties ideal for ornamental purposes. Beyond their visual appeal, camellias require specific growing conditions—preferring acidic, well-drained soil and partial shade—making them a prized addition to the gardens of enthusiasts who are up for the challenge of cultivating these stunning blooms. At Jeju’s Manor Blanc Camellia & Citrus Festival, visitors can delight in the vibrant array of camellias, appreciating their role in both garden aesthetics and cultural heritage.
