Nagoya’s Mingei Exhibition: Discover the Beauty of Everyday Objects (Clothing, Food & Shelter)

Discover the Beauty in Everyday Objects at the Mingei Exhibition in Nagoya

Have you ever stopped to appreciate the beauty in a simple, handcrafted object? The Mingei movement, championed a century ago by philosopher Sōetsu Yanagi, celebrates this very idea – finding artistry in everyday items. Now, you can experience this philosophy firsthand at the captivating Mingei exhibition in Nagoya!

This exhibition explores the intersection of art and daily life through 150 carefully chosen Mingei pieces, focusing on the core themes of clothing, food, and shelter. You’ll journey through the history of Mingei, learn about the dedicated artisans who keep these traditions alive, and discover the unique craft regions where these objects originate.

Adding a modern twist to this timeless art form is a special installation by Terry Ellis/Keiko Kitamura, the MOGI Folk Art Director and former director at the renowned select shop BEAMS. Known for their influence on the current Mingei revival, Ellis/Kitamura will showcase how these traditional crafts seamlessly integrate into contemporary living. This exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, present, and future of Mingei – a celebration of beauty in the mundane.
