Daegu Architecture Competition 2024: Design the Future by Shaping Memories

Landscapes of Memory: A Call for Innovation in the 44th Daegu Architecture Competition (2024)

Shaping the Future Through Architectural Memory

Monuments stand as testaments to our past, physical embodiments of shared memories that shape societal identity and values. Yet, as architectural historian Dolores Hayden argues, the everyday built environment holds an equally powerful capacity for preserving and shaping collective memory. Homes, schools, shops – these structures provide the framework for our lives, their walls whispering stories of times gone by.

In our era of rapid urbanization, cities transform at a dizzying pace. Familiar landmarks disappear, replaced by new structures that rise with astonishing speed. This cycle of destruction and creation raises a crucial question: how can we design architecture that not only preserves the memories of the past but also shapes the memories of the future?

The 2024 Daegu Architecture Competition invites you to explore this intricate relationship between architecture and memory. By contemplating the potential of future memories embedded within our built environment, we can begin to understand how architecture can mold our collective identity for generations to come.
